Great article about the Alien Encounter attraction. Interesting what went on behind the scenes. Definitely did not fit with the Tomorrowland vision.

From Mental Floss:

“Many of the theme park’s more seasoned Imagineers opposed a ride that was not only based on an R-rated property, but contradicted Walt Disney’s optimistic vision of tomorrow.”

I was a teenager when Alien Encounter opened and LOVED it!  I agree that it was not a good fit for Disney, especially in the Magic Kingdom.  But I still hated to see it go.

Even though the “generic” alien was pretty menacing, I can only imagine how awesome it would have been if they had used the Xenomorph from “Alien.”  Of course, that would have been even more of a bad fit for Disney.

Suppose Universal Studios had partnered to make an “Alien”-themed ride like this?  It might still be around today!
